You'd think that a student of the postmodern (or a Marxist, for that matter) ought to have disavowed such a notion some time ago. Indeed you would. But I don't need to tell you that rumours of the death of the author are greatly exaggerated, and that if as a matter of fact it should befall you to write a graduate dissertation, ambiguity of authorship is just about the only thing that could cause your undoing. Denying that the Holocaust ever happened might net you an MA in history from the University of Canterbury, but plagiarism is a step too far. Not that I am advocating passing somebody else's ideas as your own by virtue of some warped notion of the commons, mind, but patrolling this particular boundary so fiercely has its costs.
