I must indulge in an anecdote here. For a year or so during our respective PhDs I shared an office at Victoria with Gordon Calleja (this Gordon Calleja, also cited bibliographically at the end of the post) and upon entering said office I would occasionally find him with his headphones on engaged in a World of Warcraft session and talking remotely to his fellow players - whom, he later explained, were other games studies scholars from halfway around the world. The deep isolation in which I conducted my research seemed doubly absurd at those times, whilst his system had everything going for it.
